Add your tips and tricks for searchi

Google Safe Search

from the main Google Page www.google.com

Look to the right of the search box and click on preferences

http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en

You may then scroll down and choose a variety of chioces:

interface language, search language, SafeSearch filtering, number of results, and results window.

Under SafeSearch you may choose no filter, moderate filter or strict filtering.

Synonyms

Use the ~ before your main search term and synonyms for that term will also be returned.

For instance ~algebra would also return information for the general category of math.

Look for Similar Pages

If you find a webpage that you like, you can go to the bottom of the Google Advanced Search and it gives you the option to find similar pages.  Cool, huh?

Languages:

As a Social Studies teacher of the Eastern Hempishere, students often encounter sites in other languages.  Google advanced search allows the user to select a language...very nice! Jodi said this!

From the article, How to maximaze Google, I found out that you can reverse the phone look up to remove your personal information such as address, phone, etc. That is a valuable piece of info to use to protect my privacy. Also, Google can do calculations and I did not know that.

Search in google for specific phrases in a student paper in order to check for plagerism. You can also look up phone numbers and reverse phone numbers by adding either the name or number.

In searching for search strategies I found a website that gave you the best search engine for what you are trying to do...

It is really cool to see all the possible places you can search that might be designed for more specific searches.

Found on 4net search engine......use the advanced search and waalaa..there appears a directory created especially for educators

4net.com

4net search engine...when you run into a site that may be forbidden or block, you can sometimes trim down the URL.  It will take you to a different page that may have different links to get to where you need to go.

I loved the concept of advanced google search and how we can specify by taking and adding words. google is wikiwicked. claudia

I found www.noodletools.com.  It will help you determine what search engine to use and how to narrow your searches.  It also helps you cite sources using MLA and APA formats.

Try Altavista.com for their babel fish features!n.s.
